Featured Founder: Dave Anderson of Small World Generation and Moving Millennials
Profiling Entrepreneurs for Global Entrepreneurship Week
Welcome to Now Creative Group’s Entrepreneur of the Month Series!
Introducing Dave! What are you up to?
I am the co-founder of Small World Generation, and we are currently obsessed with ‘teaching kids to be safe, smart, and kind online’. We deliver an in-school workshop for students in grades 4-8 called ‘My Life Online’ that focuses on providing students with the social skills and emotional intelligence required to live a positive life online.
Although it’s on a short-term hiatus until early 2016, my podcast, Moving Millennials is about helping people create a live of travel, contribution, and freedom in their 20s and 30s. My wife and I are expecting our first child in May of 2016. For the past 5 years my BIGGEST goal is to have the freedom to be a stay-at-home dad while still growing my businesses and contributing value to the world. The goal will come to fruition in the next year. Because of this, I am also obsessed with this idea of ‘helping parents create full-time families’.
I believe that given the right vehicle, families can create a scenario where BOTH parents can stay at home, pursue their passions, regain their health, spend as much time as they choose with their kids, AND earn more than they ever have before.
Before this, what did you do? How did you become an entrepreneur?
I have been a full-time entrepreneur for 5 years now. Before that I was a Specialist at the Apple Store. The work I did for Apple Retail helped me build all kinds of important skills in sales, customer service, leadership, and communication. From my early university days (as a music major) I always new that I wanted to be an entrepreneur. My transition story is simple. I made the decision to leave my job and take a leap into entrepreneurship in August of 2010. I have never looked back.
What is your day-to-day schedule like?
Every day is different. Some days I work from my home office, some days I’m driving around for meetings in coffee shops, and some days I’m speaking to students across the country. Regardless, I stay focused on my health and fitness. I maintain a 100% vegan lifestyle, and get my local YMCA 2-5 times per week.
Where do you find inspiration?
YouTube, Podcasts, and audio books. I subscribe to a number of business and lifestyle podcasts, and have a membership with Audible. I love to listen to the #AskGaryVee show on YouTube and find that I’m constantly getting the inspiration and kick-in-the-ass I need form Gary’s words and ideas.
What are the biggest challenges or obstacles you’ve faced as an entrepreneur?
As a guy constantly working on multiple projects, my biggest challenge is to keep multiple plates spinning at once. Time-blocking is my best friend (when I use it well), and a morning ritual keeps me focused and centred (when I stay consistent with it). My morning ritual includes journaling, mediation, visualization, and exercise.
What is one of the most important keys to success in your field?
Focused, daily action. I think this is the most important key to success in any field, but it’s so important to keep on moving forward.
When do you feel most alive and ready to take on the world?
Every single time I get up in front of my boys and mens choir, A Few Good Men. I LOVE to conduct choirs, and working with AFGM is when I most quickly get into flow.
What was your experience like working with Now Creative Group to develop your branding, websites and graphics?
Now Creative Group can literally be a 1-stop shop for entrepreneurs. It’s cool to have a team of people with complimentary expertise who can collaborate in a way that allows them to understand the big picture, while getting all the details just right. Working with Now Creative Group has been a great experience and I’d highly recommend their services.
What is your goal within the next 10 years years?
My goal is and always will be centred in freedom and contribution. If I am living a life that allows me to choose what I do, when I do it, how I do it, and where I do it, then I am personally successful. If I am doing work that is enriching the lives of other people, then I am professional successful. My 10 year goal is no different than today’s goal in terms of substance, it’s just on a bigger and deeper scale.
What’s the best thing about being an entrepreneur?
Choice. Freedom. Limitless possibilities. The ability to create every single day. The freedom to be with my family when I choose to be.
If you got to meet a version of yourself in high school, what’s one thing you would say to yourself?
Keep on doing the things that move you the most. Pay attention to your positive emotions and notice what you’re doing when you feel happiest. THAT is when you should focus on. Get better at that, look at ways to monetize that, and add value to peoples’ lives doing THAT.
Share some inspiration.
“The bad news it time flies. The good news is you’re the pilot.” — Michael Altshuler
I love this quote because it puts our perspective of time exactly where it needs to be. We can all choose how to use our time. Unfortunately, it’s really easy to get trapped into a place where you’re allowing other people dictate how you use your time – this can be true even as an entrepreneur. This quote serves as a reminder for me. I am the pilot. I choose how I spend my minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years. So do you.
