What does your business offer?
I offer leadership facilitation, coaching and training across all sectors. I believe the result of my facilitation gives leaders the opportunity to have a broader impact and I help them feel more confident and competent in their roles.
What were you doing before this?
This is not a new venture for me. I have been doing this for 15 years. Prior to this, I was an on staff coach.
Where do you find inspiration?
The moment a client makes a connection between what it is we’re talking about, and how they can use this knowledge in their life and in their job. My general philosophy is that it’s the small actions that leaders do, that can have a huge impact. My role is to uncover those small actions. When I am able to carve the path for leaders to allow them to have a greater influence as a leader… that is where I find my inspiration and motivation. My overarching goal is to help leaders role easier and meaningful to them.
What is your everyday schedule like?
My schedule is always changing. I spent some days speaking to rooms of 200+ leaders, and others day’s I do one on one coaching with clients. I try to do sequenced days of working with larger audiences, followed with one-on-one sessions.
What are the biggest challenges or obstacles you’ve faced as an entrepreneur?
Building a network in my industry has been challenging. I had some difficulties finding common forums where I could connect with individuals who are in a similar field. It was important for me to find those people I could establish relationships with, and discuss how they run their business. Overtime, my circle has grown, mainly by attending conferences and taking courses.
What’s the best thing about having your own business?
The best part is definitely having the opportunity to work with so many different people, at every stage of their leadership development. Leadership is found in practically every field, meaning I also get the chance to work with individuals across all sectors and industries and in lots of interesting places.
Can you share with us a challenging experience in your venture, and how you overcame it?
There was a time I did a session for a group of leaders in Korea. The issue at hand was that both parties’ expectations were very different going into the session. The attendee’s expected more of a presentation, where I would talk and they would listen. An approach that we might describe as more traditional, teacher-student. My approach involves much more hands on time, and much more dialogue between the attendees and myself. Halfway through, I could tell there was something off. I had to approach this as transparently as possible, while still being respectful of their expectation. Luckily, we were able to come to an agreement that would marry my process with their expectations. In my job, it’s important to keep an open mind and stay flexible, because everyone learns differently.
